Brompton Cemetery

My husband had a training course in London a couple of weeks ago and I decided to tag along and do a little leg work for an ebook I am working on. I am attempting to compile a list of fun free things to do in and around London and I was overwhelmed by how many things that I discovered during the hours and hours of research that I did before the trip. With an extensive list in hand and three days to see if they were worth talking about I headed out to explore…

Days Out During Spring Break

One of the great things that I have found about living where we do is that there are so many fun things to do and see within a very short distance. Not long ago my kids had their term break an my husband decided to take the second week of it off as well with the intention of just hanging around home with the family. Still having the whole family together for full days is a bit of a novelty at the minute so we did squeeze in some day trips throughout the week to…

Still A Stranger?

The fourth of May is a bit of an anniversary for our family these days as it was the date we arrived in England. This May fourth marks four years since we arrived here. Four years actually feels like a long time. We have done a lot of exploring of this country and several trips to Europe. We have fallen in love with the country and the people. The things that at one time seemed uncomfortable and unfamiliar are not odd to us anymore, and in some ways it is odd that they are not odd.…

Lepe Beach Day

The seaside is my happy place. It doesn't much matter what is going in my life I will find a level of calm and tranquility if I get to feel the sea breeze and listen to the waves as they wash over the sand. I don't even mind about the weather really but I admit that with a day by the ocean in the warm sun and I can sort out a multitude of worries so I was very excited when my husband planned a mini getaway to the beach for our family. Lepe beach…

My Experience at The Eat and Drink Festival

I love food. I am not kidding, I am extremely fond of food, eating and preparing it. It shouldn't be a surprise then that when my husband got some tickets to the Eat and Drink Festival in London I was pretty keen. At the very least any excuse to go in to London is a good excuse in my opinion. Although if I am being technical it was actually held at the Olympia in Hammersmith, which is a massive venue by the way, so we didn't get into central London on this visit. Coming through…

How to Walk Rome in Four Days

If you follow me on Instagram then you will know that my daughter and I jetted off to Rome for a lovely four day city break. It would be easy for me to spend four days telling you all about the amazing things that we got to see and some of the misadventures that occurred but to save you all falling asleep I will try to capture the highlights and give you some tips for traveling there. My daughter and I arrived there at 12:30 in the morning and this is my first tip, book…

Exploring Fairford

One of my favourite things to do is hop in the car and go for a little drive until we come across some cute little place we've never been to and then go for a walk to explore it. It costs basically nothing and gets me out enjoying this beautiful country that I get to live in. However I am not entirely certain that my husband thinks this is quite as fun as I do so it is a great surprise when he asks, "do you want to go for a drive?".  A couple of…

Staycations

I have always felt like there is a wide gap between the normal everyday me and the me that I become on vacation. The normal me is very mindful of our financial situation, very concerned about work, extremely detailed and list oriented, and plans every minute of her time carefully. Vacation me, very relaxed. Vacation me plans nothing, leaves all her lists at home, wastes time beautifully, and can put aside the concerns of work and home life easily (well right up until the last day when I start calculating exactly how much we spent…

Chepstow Castle, Wales

Over the past year we have had a fair amount of visitors from Canada come see us. Always when a new guest is due to arrive I try to make a list of activities and places to take them. The problem is that most of them want to experience England's top sights and so my family and I end up going to the same attractions over and over. It is not that we mind particularly, they are beautiful and we certainly wanted to see them all when we got here as well, but there is something…

A Little London at Christmas

My niece has come to stay for the holidays and we were anxious to show her some of the wonderful Christmas sights that can be found around England at this time of year. A few days before Christmas we found ourselves wandering around London discovering just how festive a place it is. Our first stop was at Borough Market and it did not disappoint. True to the nature of the market itself, the Christmas decorations had a far more rustic, handmade quality to them. Really we were here to pick up some of their amazing…
